Beneath the Tree Cartoon

It’s the age-old story of the epic battle between cats and dogs! I’ve seen it in my own house many times. One such battle inspired this “Beneath the tree cartoon.”

Beneath the tree cartoon. A dog says to a cat, "Come down! All I want to do is talk about taking a bite out of crime."

Why do cats and dogs have such an adversarial relationship? One blog post suggests it’s less about the two species always being at war with the other and more to do with getting used to each other.

Both species have predator-prey instincts. Dogs love to give chase to smaller animals, which will naturally spook a cat. If you saw someone twice your size running after you, you’d be afraid too!

And of course, cross-species communication can be a problem. After all, how much success have you had communicating with another species? My cat is still trying to understand me.

Dogs are much more social than cats. That is also going to lead to issues. That said, when cats and dogs live in the same home and get used to each other, they can tolerate each other quite nicely.

People and Pets

One thing I’ve observed is that people are a lot like pets. We have communication issues too. Humans have issues getting our point across to another human, let alone another species!

Our personalities can conflict with others. We may have a different view of the world due to our upbringing and education. Let’s face it, when we see a cat and a dog get along, we humans can learn a lot from them!

Therefore, let’s consider the example of cats and dogs that dwell peacefully in the same home. Sure, one may chase the other and one may hiss once in a while. But with some patience, we can get along in the end.

I drew this for Illustration Friday. The word was “Beneath,” and helped me come up with this beneath the tree cartoon.

Editor’s Note: I originally published this blog on October 6, 2015. I revamped and updated it for timeliness and comprehensiveness.
