GPS Sheep Tracking

This cartoon is a good example of how technology has changed. When I first drew this, smartphones were just beginning to replace standalone GPS units. Who would have thought that today, there is such a thing as GPS sheep tracking?

Cartoon of two sheep

Today, we can track anything, including livestock. Radiofrequency identification (RFID) technology is small enough, we can keep track of and identify an entire flock without leaving the house.

The Fate of Domesticated Sheep

Domestic sheep are much more helpless than their wild cousins. Frankly, they cannot survive without a shepherd. They will blindly follow the flock into danger. We may have heard the myth of lemmings following a group to a cliff. They have nothing on sheep!

Left to themselves, sheep wander aimlessly. Not only will they wander into danger, but they will also wander away from good pasture and water. Whether they encounter a predator, or just can’t find a decent place for a meal, sheep suffer the same fate.

We are all Sheep

I hate to break it to you, but we are a lot like sheep. I was probably thinking of Isaiah 53:6 when I wrote this cartoon.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way.”

Isaiah 53:6 (KJV)

It is very easy to get lost in this world. And it is way too easy to get swayed by a crowd. The next thing we know, a pastoral flock of sheep act more like a cattle stampede. We can get angry and charge a target without knowing all the facts. Beware of a flock of angry sheep!

Sheep have a lousy sense of direction. Therefore, whatever you do, don’t let the flock use the GPS sheep tracking!
