The hardest thing about being a substitute teacher is playground duty. It’s not because the kids are that bad, not that the weather is so horrible. It’s because as a teacher, you’re supposed to be watching the kids, not playing on the equipment.

Otherwise, one may end up like this poor guy. Tube slides are something that came along after my playground days. I can just imagine how terrifying it would be for a grown man to get caught in one of those things. Perhaps I should find out…

True story: I was a church janitor once. Actually, I was a teen church janitor for over two years. When your grandfather is the pastor and your father is the Maintenance Supervisor you get those kinds of perks. I have maintenance supervisor in italics because it was a small church, Dad was a volunteer and he had the job because no one else was available on a Saturday morning and Grandpa trusted him with the keys. (My brother and I must be the only church janitors in modern history that never had an impressive set of keys.) Continue reading “A Clean, Janitor-Free Dream”

Creativity Can Get Noisy

Creativity can come unexpectedly and in some amazing varieties. Sometimes, it takes some cutting up and a little obnoxious behavior to get the creative juices flowing.

When I saw my three-year-old niece the other day, she was expressing some “noisy boy” creativity in the form of some rude noises. Perhaps rude noises aren’t limited by gender anymore. And it may do us good to act as carefree as a preschooler or preteen friends when it comes to creativity. May we all have a chance to express a little creativity with some friends today.

Rousing Baby Quartet

Cartoon of four babies in baby bedsCartoon of four babies in baby beds. One baby says, “Do you know what we have here? We have the makings of a great quartet!

When I have served in nurseries and the babies began wailing, I’ve often wondered what it would be like if the kiddos cried in harmony. Someone needs to modify an autotune device so it could make church nurseries harmonious places.

A Senior Pastor’s Moat

Cartoon of a man at an alligator-infested moat. The man yells, “Doris! It’s Bob, the Children’s Pastor. I have an appointment with Pastor Kenneth!

No matter where you go, it can be difficult to get access to leaders. Sometimes, it is because leaders get interrupted continually. Sometimes, it can be because of personalities that clash. Other times, it may be because there was a great sale on moats and alligators. It can be for a host of reasons.

This cartoon was not taken from a real-life experience. Nor were there any reptiles harmed in the creation of this cartoon.
