Palm Sunday Cartoon

Happy Palm Sunday! It will be an exciting time in many churches and children’s ministries today. The palm branches will be flying in many church services. It can be a confusing time for the kids and since the event happens so close to spring break, I had to draw this Palm Sunday cartoon!

Palm Sunday Spring Break cartoon. A boy says, "I thought Palm Sunday was when everyone went to Florida for spring break."

For those who don’t know what Palm Sunday is, here’s an explanation. The story is found in all four of the Gospels.

When I drew this, Palm Sunday fell very close to spring break for many U.S. schools. Many kids up north don’t see palm branches unless they are on vacation or it’s Palm Sunday. In either case, it’s good to know these kids are finding out what Palm Sunday is really about.

For many years, my wife would purchase palm branches from the local florist, pass them out to each child, and would have the kids march into the main service while the congregation sang a Palm Sunday-related hymn.

We stopped doing it after a while. It was partly because any newcomers would be very confused if they were given a palm branch and instructed to march into the service with the others. Some years, we would give the kids palm branches just for them to take home.

I often wondered how this ritual played out in places where palm branches were plentiful. In the Midwest, we are still waiting for any green branches when this day rolls around. After all, yesterday, I was driving through a snow shower! Come on! It’s April already. Can’t we get past the snow and have a little greenery in the woods?

May today be a great day of celebration as we enter Holy Week, and enjoy this Palm Sunday cartoon!

Editor’s Note: I originally published this blog on October 6, 2015. I revamped and updated it for timeliness and comprehensiveness.
