Is patience really a virtue?

I’ve been waiting. I’ve been waiting for some time. A few years ago, John Mayer had the song, “Waiting On the World to Change.” I didn’t particularly like the song at the time because it sounded like whining. It’s not a song about patience! But lately, I’ve been doing a lot of waiting. I’ve discovered there is a fine line between waiting patiently, and just waiting for something… anything to happen.

Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of waiting. My career has been in transition for over a year now. During this time, I’ve discovered there is a fine line between waiting patiently, and just waiting for something… anything to happen. Too often, I’ve practiced the eye roll and tapped my fingers on the table.

When my kids were younger and they wanted something, I would quote, “Patience is a virtue!” They didn’t want to hear that. If I was honest then, I would have admitted I was impatiently telling them to be patient!

We all have to wait for something. As Christmas approaches, many of us will be waiting for that special gift. Not many of us will do it patiently. Patience is an attitude. It’s something our culture doesn’t appreciate. We are encouraged to spend now, don’t wait, and demand what you “deserve.”

Patience still is a virtue. It allows us to have a better attitude when things aren’t going our way. So keep tabs on me. I’ll make the best effort to stay patient while I continue to wait for the next best thing.
