Going Viral at Church

When I drew this month’s cartoon for the Church of God newsletter, I was thinking of how the coronavirus has dominated our news so far in 2020. It appears it isn’t going away anytime soon. Something viral can have good as well as bad connotations.

It seems the goal of most Internet influencers is to have something that goes viral. That makes someone an influencer after all, doesn’t it?

This week, the church I attend has experience a little viral moment. I’m quite proud of my local church, Salem Church of God, and our congregation’s generosity. We’ve raised over $40,000 to help local schools pay off school lunch debt across the Miami Valley! We have been able to help nine school districts so far!

And on top of that, it has caused our church to make the local and national news!

There are times when it is good to go viral. I hope the pastor in my cartoon gets things figured out before he has to spend two weeks on a quarantined pulpit.

Better than Google

I feel sorry for reference librarians and the people that mind information booths. There was once a time when those skills depended solely on your knowledge compared to other people. Now they have to compete with search engines. At least the human touch can be much more friendly than the Googled version.

The Hazards of Church Bats and Squirrels

Maintenance issues abound at churches, especially the older ones. I never attended a church that had a belfry. But I wish I did so I could say at least once there were bats in the belfry. It seems squirrels in the attic would create an equally erratic outcome.

I Just Love a Pond Baptism!

I didn’t have the benefit of a baptism in the great outdoors. Mine was in a church sanctuary. A few weeks ago, I got to witness over two dozen people get baptized outside. I overheard someone commenting about what could be swimming around that pond. Since this was in Ohio, alligators were quickly ruled out.

It was a great day of celebration and no one came up with a fish, frog or crawdad attached to an arm!

Just why is brainstorming for service projects so hard?

It can be hard brainstorming about projects for others when there are dirty dishes in the sink and weeds in the front yard, can’t it? I’ve found I have no problem learning how to be selfish. It comes naturally to me. Before I know it, I’m thinking less about others who have it much worse than me and start thinking about my own little world. How about you?
