I have worked with kids at church for some time. My goal has been to pass along some of the joys and insights I have learned along the way. That can be challenging when children are excited and very active. So this led to this spiritual discipline for kids cartoon.

There is a big difference between a Sunday morning and an evening group of kids. On Sunday morning, most children are subdued. They may be just waking up. Perhaps the cereal hasn’t kicked in or they were doing activities the night before.

Does it feel like the world is in a hostile takeover?

When I first drew this cartoon, I was thinking about business takeovers in the era of the Great Recession. It was a time when housing bubbles and sub-par mortgages dominated the news. The thought of a rogue virus taking on the world economy was nowhere to be found.

Today, most businesses are more concerned with the effects of the virus than with another corporation coming in and swallowing them up. We all face a common enemy now. It’s as if this virus is immature sticking out its tongue at us.

But it can be vanquished. We can win this war. It will take time, determination, and a pivot in how we do business. This is a time to unite against a common enemy. This virus is relentless and hostile. Let’s work together to end this scourge.

Of Clowns and Parents

My kids probably thought I was a clown at times. I’ve spent the better part of thirty years coming up with cartoon gags, being silly in front of a large group of elementary kids and firing off one-liners at occasionally inappropriate times.

I have taken pride in getting someone to laugh, especially when they were feeling down. I take less pride in the times I was more immature than funny. It has happened much more than I would like to admit.

I have learned over the years that attacking immaturity with an immature attitude never works. If a child has an anger issue, striking back with an angrier, overpowering tone may appear to work. But in the long term, it only makes parents and children angrier.

Do as I say, not as I do may sound catchy, but we all know the hypocrisy of such a saying. I have been there, parents. When your kids are acting up, keep your cool. Stay mature and save the clowning for intentionally fun times. You can do it! I tip my polka dot hat with the squirting daisy to you!
