Autumn in the spring activity (in progress)

Puzzle_pg3_psd___71_8___Color_Fill_1__RGB_8___I’ve been working on an activity book lately. In this activity, the student finds and circles the activities that AREN’T spring activities. Though truth be told, I’ve seen a snowman in the spring time. He was mushy and didn’t look very happy, but those around him were more than happy he was dissolving into a puddle.

I am illustrating this activity for Warner Press. This book will come out January, 2015.

As I am writing this, it is autumn in my neck of the woods. What are your favorite autumn activities?

Cartoon: Stuck-up Snowman

Cartoon of two girls and a snowman

Cartoon of two girls walking away from a snowman. One says, “I can’t believe he’s giving me the cold shoulder!”

Those snowmen can be stuck-up, or can they? Maybe they’re a little introverted. Come on, girls! Give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he’s imagining a day on the beach, or perhaps he’s trying to figure out how to survive spring. At any rate, you won’t realize how much you miss him until he’s gone in March.

Cartoon: The Puddle

Cartoon of two children staring at a snowman

Cartoon of of two children staring at a snowman. One says, “One month, you’re king of the mountain. The next month, you’re a puddle.”

Winter is quickly fading away around here. All the snow people have met a disastrous end thanks to some warm temps and little reinforcing snow. Seasons remind us that change is around the corner no matter how young or old you are.

It also reminds us there are cycles in life. If you don’t like the way things are going, wait and they’ll change. On the other hand, if you’re king of the mountain, don’t get too comfortable up there. Things are bound to change sooner or later!

Cartoon: Snowball Ambush

Cartoon of a man about to be ambushed with snowballs

Cartoon of a man looking at a snowball while others are about to hit him. The caption says, “For a moment, Mark was embarrassed. A grown man shouldn’t throw snowballs at neighborhood boys.”

Never underestimate the craftiness of neighborhood kids. Once they see you with a snowball in your hand, all bets are off. You have shown you are willing to tango, and they will make sure they lead! They will make sure any snowball fight you start, will be finished before you can say, “Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea!”

Cartoon: Quick Seasons

Cartoon of a boy in winter clothes and another dressed in summer clothes

Cartoon of two boys. One is dressed for winter, while the other is in summer clothes. One says, “The seasons changed? No one told me.”

I used to think it was cool going out in the winter air without a coat. The first time I caught walking pneumonia tempered my excitement in that arena. Now that I’m older, I find myself flailing my arms and speaking in a shrill voice to my children who want to go out in sub zero weather in shorts and flip flops. I guess the chickens have come home to roost.

At least they can’t say no one ever told them.
