family sketch journal

Nice day for a reunion

Today was a great day for a reunion. I got to sketch some family members. We were in Ohio State territory so everyone was happy about the football game. Plus the weather was perfect.

It was great being around my wife’s family. Everyone is down to earth, laid back and they genuinely care for each other. They’ve gotten used to me sneaking in a sketch or two of them and they tolerate it quite well.
I drew this in mechanical pencil in my trusty sketchbook.

Cartoon: A Strong Dog

Spear-Cartoon_3519

Cartoon of boy with pets. Boy says to dog, “Look at it this way. It takes a strong dog to admit the cat rules the house.”

No doubt about it. In our house, the cat rules the roost. The only exception is when our dog is able to ambush the cat. Corners are very good for that.

I also drew this for Illustration Friday. This week’s word is “strong.”

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator CS2

Cartoon: An Accountant’s Web Site

Cartoon of man at computer. He says, “I think I found your brother, the accountant’s web site.”

This is a classic cartoon I did back in 1996 for the sixth edition of the “New Rider’s Internet Yellow Pages.”

The computer and my concept of web sites have changed since then. I couldn’t have seen very many of them at that time. Many had sparse graphics or none at all. Don’t you just love sites with lots of graphics? Me too.

Cartoon: New Cell Phone

Cartoon of boy with cell phone. He says to a baby, “Dad won’t upgrade his cell phone until it’s broken. Here! Chew on it for a while.”

My daughter has been after me to get a new cell phone. Hey! What’s wrong with the one I have? It still works. My fashion conscious daughter does not seem to buy that argument. I may be starting to show my age. *Sigh!*

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator CS2

Cartoon: The Great Computerized Novel

Cartoon of angry man at pc. Man says, “How am I supposed to write the great American novel when my computer thinks my manuscript stinks?”

This is a classic cartoon I did back in 1996 for the sixth edition of the “New Rider’s Internet Yellow Pages.”

No matter how far technology advances, computers will never be able to write the great novel. Why? Because none of us ever know what it is until we see it. The arts are just too wonderfully mysterious.

In Michael Gelb’s book, “How to Think Like Leonardo Da Vinci,” he called the mysterious, “sfumato.” It means going up in smoke. It’s the ambiguity and uncertainty in the arts. No computer will be able to mimic that. A PC will go up in smoke if it has to embrace ambiguity.
