How do You Handle Cell Phones in Church?

I remember the first time I saw someone have their mobile phone out at a church service. A teen was playing a game in the middle of the sermon. Since then, mobile phones have invaded every aspect of life. How do you handle cell phones in church?

That question inspired my cartoon for this month. This pastor has had enough of divided attention in his pews. Practically, the pastor’s idea isn’t going to work. Alas, it’s illegal to jam cell phone signals in the United States.

Cartoon of a pastor and janitor. The pastor says, "I need people really listening to the sermon. Look into jamming cell phone signals!" How do you handle cell phones in church?

When Your Electronic Device Breaks…

Since I drew this cartoon, we have become a bit less dependent on desktops and laptops and more dependent on our smartphones. I’ve witnessed this recently.

When I was in an airport, the majority of people were on their phones. We keep in touch. We make our calls, text our friends and family and find out what the latest news is. We shudder to think what would happen if our favorite electronic device broke.

Today, if our electronic device broke, we would be hard pressed to find anyone willing to let us borrow theirs. It’s become an extension of us. It would almost be like asking a friend to borrow their toothbrush!

Are we getting too dependent on our electronic devices?

This has made me reconsider my smartphone addiction. I’m not sure I want to willingly give up my phone, but perhaps I depend too much on my electronic devices. How about you?

Can you survive if your computer crashed?

cartoon of a monk saying, "It's amazing how backward I feel when my computer crashes."A guy dressed as a monk says, “It’s amazing how backward I feel when my computer crashes.

Have you ever though what would you do if your computer crashed and you lost everything? I love my computer but I also love having my sketchbook close by. I was horrified when I was away from pen and paper for a while and saw how atrocious my penmanship could become.

The other day, I thought about my scores of sketchbooks versus the thousands of files on my computer. Both are fragile. Paper burns and computers crash. But there is something about the sketchbooks that make it more likely they will last after I am gone. Paper is at least a little harder to dispose of than a computer’s memory.

Old-Fashioned Technology

Illustration of an Amish man at an old PC. I drew this for Illustration Friday. This week’s word is “old-fashioned.”

When I’ve gone through Amish country, I’ve wondered how they do business in the modern world without technology. I know the different sects deal with technology differently. So is it possible there is Amish business done through an old 386 computer with 5 1/4 inch floppy disks? I’m sure someone will tell me!

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator.
