Too Young, Too Old

I remember when it was the generation or two before me that said, “Just wait until you’re my age!” Now that I am that age, I still wonder what they were talking about.

Cartoon of older man and boy. The man says, "Just wait until you're my age and you forget what it's like to be your age!"

Ah, to be young again! The young ones want to be grown-up while the older folk wish they could be a little green around the gills once more!

The reality is all generations have had advantages and challenges. In addition, we can learn from each other. The minute one generation thinks the next or previous ones are irrelevant is the moment there is too much pride for anybody to learn anything.

However, each generation has a contribution that is valuable. Here are six reasons it’s great for different generations to learn from each other. In addition, different techniques and preferences add a more complete picture to a workforce.

Older workers can offer experience and wisdom that only comes from living a full life. Younger workers can be more apt to take risks and innovate. I admit it can be a tightrope walk.

Older workers can be tempted to nix an idea because it didn’t work in the past. However, younger workers can forget the old adage, “Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.” Acting too recklessly can end in disaster. But being too cautious prevents businesses from innovating.

In addition, older generations can learn from younger employees who are digital natives. When a group grows up with technology, it becomes second nature to them. They are comfortable with what hardware and software can do. It is very helpful for older generations to see what is possible with new technology, then apply that knowledge to tried and true methods.

The good old days seem good because we have selective memory. Let’s resist the temptation to say, “Just wait until you’re my age.” Because let’s face it, all we really have is now, so we might as well enjoy it.
