A Week of Pondering

This week, I have been on vacation. I have had the opportunity to catch up on some reading. One of the books I’ve loved this week is “Making Ideas Happen” by Scott Belsky.

Here are two of the points I’ve received from this book:

  1. To-do lists/action steps are critical to getting an idea off the ground. It helps keep the focus on an idea.
  2. Self-marketing and transparency are critical to making your idea known.

In the coming weeks, I’m going to consider how I need to make larger ideas happen. I love to create gag cartoons, but I need to go to the next level in order to give them life.

I love how this book has made me reconsider how to get creative ideas to the next level. I’d recommend this book to any creative professional.

Scott Belsky is the founder and CEO of the Behance Network. The site for this book is www.makingthingshappen.com.

Cartoon: Cooking Computers

Cartoon of a chef and computer. The chef says, “Welcome, everyone! It’s time for another exciting episode of ‘Silicone Chef.’”

This is an illustration I did back in 1996 for the sixth edition of the “New Rider’s Internet Yellow Pages.”

I added the caption recently. It reminded me of all the Food Network’s “Iron Chef” episodes my family has watched. Today’s secret ingredient is… rawhide! We love how crazy and creative that show can get.

On what day did God create the Internet?

I read an article from Ministry Tech Magazine. It was talking about cloud computing and how it’s coming faster than anyone would have anticipated. No, it didn’t answer on what day God created the Internet!

The author talked about how netbooks and iPhones are totally changing the way we use computers. it reminded me of a problem we had at my church the other week. I normally use the Internet for portions of my lesson and accessing files from my MobileMe account. IT changed the setup so there was no longer a password needed to get onto the wireless.

The only problem was, I couldn’t get on at all. It seemed all the smartphones were hogging the connection. Whether people were using the wi-fi or not, the phones aggressively accessed the wi-fi nonetheless.

It amazes me how pervasive technology has become in our church in such a small amount of time. How has technology affected how your church works?

Singing praises

The kids were watching “American Idol” last night. Singing can be a hazardous activity. Always be sure to take adequate precautions!

Coloring Nitpicking

Caption: “It’s nice, but Jesus needs a brown beard, the sky should be sunny and you put polka dots on the boy’s shirt. I don’t like polka dots.”

When I was four or five, I was coloring a picture in Sunday school. A teacher’s helper came over to see what I was coloring. He said, “That’s a nice cow, but cows aren’t purple.”

I continued coloring while I announced, “Well, this cow is!”

He went to the next kid pretty quickly. I thought he was nuts because I heard about a purple cow on “Captain Kangaroo.”

With that attitude, I must have been destined to be an artist. To all you parents and teachers who wonder what in the world the kid is thinking when he or she drew it, don’t worry about it. Let them be creative.
