Green With Envy Cartoon

One day in kids’ church, I taught a lesson on jealousy and envy. I used this green with envy cartoon to get the kids thinking about the subject.

Green with Envy Cartoon. A girl says, "Admit it! You're green with envy!"

The term, “green with envy,” could have gone back as far as the time of the Ancient Greeks. They associated a green complexion with sickness, fear, and jealousy. Later, William Shakespeare alluded to the term in Othello.

O beware, my lord, of jealousy;
It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on.

Iago in Othello

Our lesson was on envy versus contentment and how we get distracted from loving others and God when we are envious.

Designer Christmas and Complementary Colors

cartoon of a man and a green monster in a Santa costume. The Monster says, "The great thing about being a monster around Christmas is it's the on day I can wear a red outfit with my green skin."Christmas is one holiday where we see red and green everywhere. It grabs our attention. Any other time of the year, we would be chided for wearing such clashing colors. My wife has spent the better part of thirty years reminding me why that is a no-no… except at Christmas!

Red and green are color complements. If we look at a color wheel, red and green are opposite of each other on the wheel.

Complementary colors fight for attention. They bring energy and strength to any object or artwork that uses the colors together. Isn’t it a bit ironic that a holiday associated with peace, comfort, and joy has such a color theme?

Then again, Christmas isn’t quite as it seems. A king is born in a barn. Shepherds are the first to visit the newborn. Magi must keep the good news a secret from another, insecure, power-hungry king.

There is much more to Christmas than peaceful nativity scenes and carols about sleepy towns and babies that don’t cry.

Frankenphones and Frankenapps

Frankenstein admires his frankenphone and frankenapps
kevinspear.com

Since it’s October, my thoughts turn to spooky monsters like giant Frankenstein smartphones and vampires like data-sucking and battery-sucking apps. Fear not! This post delves into the frightening world of Frankenphones and Frankenapps.

Beware of the little monsters lurking within your new smartphone. I have seen many phones also bring the zombie curse to their users. Only a spell would explain the crazy obsession with selfies.

So, to paraphrase James Whitcomb Riley’s old poem:  “The smartphone’s gonna getcha if ya don’t watch out!”

Editor’s Note: I originally published this blog on October 6, 2015. I revamped and updated it for timeliness and comprehensiveness.

Bird and Cone Head Inked outline

inked in illustration for a bird and cone head at a bus stop

I’ve decided to pursue this illustration and see where it ends up. The boy looks like he’s lonely in spite of the characters at his bus stop. Maybe if I finish the illustration, he’ll be ready for the school bus.
