Cartoon of Dad and son at a gravesite. The dad says, “You would have liked him. Grandma says he loved to read the funny papers.”
Today is Memorial Day in the United States. When I thought of this cartoon, I thought of my wife’s grandfather. Though he didn’t pass away when he was a soldier in World War II, he was gone before I met my wife. I’ve wondered what stories he would have told my children about his tour of duty. I wonder if he could have told those stories. I have no idea what kind of sacrifices he had to make and if the pain would have still been too much to share with his great-grandchildren.
I am thankful for the men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. I am also thankful for my family members, friends, and ancestors who fought for my country. I hope to hear your stories sometime.
