Pride and Humility

Like most English words, pride is a nuanced word that can have both good and bad meanings. I like what John Maxwell says about pride and humility.

There are two kinds of pride, both good and bad. ‘Good pride’ represents our dignity and self-respect. ‘Bad pride’ is the deadly sin of superiority that reeks of conceit and arrogance.

John C. Maxwell

Just when we think we have humility figured out, it causes us to experience pride. The poor guy in the cartoon hasn’t figured this dilemma out yet.

Perennial Rides

Cartoon of a grandfather and grandson on a roller coaster.

I drew this for Illustration Friday. This week’s word is “perennial.”

When I heard the word, I thought about some people who may be up in years, but still love the amusement park rides. It’s always fun to see a senior citizen tackle a roller coaster. I also thought of the perennial summer traditions like county fairs and trips to amusement parks.

Story Figures: Jesus Calms the Storm

Illustration for a curriculum activity. I drew these figures for the story of Jesus and the storm. Based on John 6:16-€“21; Matthew 14:22-€“36

I drew this activity a couple of years ago. It was fun working on this one. I imagined how the kids would act out the story as one child would “rock” the ocean and another child would add voices to the scared disciples. I’ve always admired Peter’s chutzpah in this story too!
