Cartoon: Tech Timmy

Cartoon of a man shouting from a door for help

Cartoon of a man yelling from a room. He says, “I can’t get the laptop to work with the projector. Get Timmy in the preschool class!”

Yes, I’ve been there. When in doubt, find a kid that’s grown up with the technology. They may be precocious, but they sure know their stuff!

I drew this cartoon for K! Magazine.

Cartoon: Ruined Childhood

Cartoon of a boy yelling about homework

Cartoon of a boy yelling, “Math, reading, writing…all this homework is ruining my childhood!”

I imagine I’ll be yelling something similar when I do my income taxes. Why can’t we all just leave our work, go out and play? Because it’s February, that’s why. Have you seen how cold it is out there? Might as well buckle down and get the work done!

Cartoon: Gift of Silliness

Cartoon of teacher in silly clothes

Cartoon of guy in a silly hat. He says, “Apparently, my spiritual gift is being silly with the toddlers.”

One thing I love about teaching kids is I get to act silly in church. There’s something wonderfully whimsical about waltzing down the hallway, past the seniors’ Sunday school class, with an umbrella hat and maracas. The smirks and grimaces are well worth the effort.

I drew this cartoon for K! Magazine.

How Do You Find a Volunteer?

Cartoon of a man with a chokehold on another. The man says, "I found someone to help me with the fourth graders."

If you serve any time in children’s ministry or a nonprofit, you will inevitably hear someone ask, “How do you find a volunteer?”

I love it when someone finds a new volunteer. You can smell the anxiety as they wonder if the children will eat them alive. Relax! That never happens… at least, it neverĀ literally happens.

I remember feeling that anxiety. Today I realize it wasn’t as much about the kids as it was about trying something new. Yes, I felt awkward and unprepared when I began teaching in Sunday school. But today, I see stepping out of my comfort zone was worth it.

Are you afraid of trying something new that will stretch you? Accept the uncomfortable feelings and do it anyway. You’ll be glad you did.

I drew this cartoon for Kidzmatter Magazine.

Editor’s Note: I originally published this blog on October 6, 2015. I revamped and updated it for timeliness and comprehensiveness.
