How to Keep your Interest Strong

When we start a project, we are excited about the possibilities. Something new can give us a jolt of adrenaline and give us a new passion for the days ahead. But how do we keep our interest strong when we are in the middle of a tough, drawn-out slough?

The whole secret of life is to be interested in one thing profoundly and in a thousand things well.”

Horace Walpole

This time of year, high school seniors are well into “senioritis.” They can see that the end is in sight, but the distance between March and May feels like a million miles away. We have all been there. I was probably thinking about this when I wrote this post on postponing school for lack of interest.

Boy asking why can't school be postponed?

How do you keep your interest strong when a project takes longer than the enthusiasm it initially produced?

Focus on One Thing

In the book The ONE Thing, by Gary Keller, the author states that the reason many projects fail is that we don’t focus our energy on the one big goal that matters.

Distractions can take us off course very quickly. The tyranny of urgent matters gets in the way of the big goal that is important but doesn’t seem as urgent when the result is months out.

Focus on the one big goal and visualize what it will be like when we hit that goal.

Remember the Why

Why is this project or goal so important? What results will it bring when it is achieved? When we achieve it, how will it make us feel?

We can get bogged down in the how of a goal and lose sight of the reason we started it in the first place. In Start with Why, Simon Sinek reminds us that when we know why we are doing something, it is tremendously motivational.

Acknowledge the Messy Middle

Every long-term project has a messy middle. We get excited at the beginning and rejoice when the goal is achieved. But in the middle are many obstacles, detours, and frustrations. If it was easy, someone else would have done it already, right?

Any worthy project will have a messy middle. We can acknowledge we are there, focus on the goal and remember the why. It can get us through challenging times.

Keep Your Interest Strong!

Today may be messy. We may be distracted for a moment. But keep going! Whether we have senioritis, a cumbersome project, or a life stage that seems to drag on forever, we can keep motivated and keep moving towards a worthy goal.

Passion Brings Possibilities

Passion for our work and life is a curious emotion. If what we are doing fires us up, time and difficulties vanish. But if we are not careful, challenges can begin to extinguish our flame. That is why it is so important to keep our fervor because passion brings possibilities.

What Fires Our Souls?

This quote by Jean de La Fontaine fires me up! What is it does the same for you? Is it a god-given talent that you love to use? Could it be the people or place you grew up with? How about the family you are raising?

In our world, passion gets confused with the love someone has for another. And yes, that is one facet of passion. But it is much more than romantic love.

We may be good at something. But as I learned from a friend, we can have talent, yet our passion lies somewhere else. We may excel at our jobs, but long for something more fulfilling. When we find our enthusiasm, passion brings possibilities.

The Passion of Christ

When I first heard that phrase, I was confused. Society’s definition was all about romantic love. Why would anyone call Jesus’ road to the cross a passion?

But today, I see that emotion was the key to Jesus’ commitment. Why else would anyone give up their life for anyone else? Everything within us wants to live as long as we can. While it is true some contend with tragic situations and emotions that cause them to take their lives, it is a whole other level to willingly give one’s life for the sake of the other. Such sacrifice is profound.

Passion causes us to have hope and a future. It brings possibilities far beyond our imaginations. Never discount the value of passion. It not only makes life worth living, but it also renews life.

Christ’s passion for us caused the impossible to become possible. It is amazing how passion brings possibilities.

A Difference Between Talent and Passion

Last month, I had the pleasure of interviewing Todd Braschler for CHOGNews. He is a talented guy with a heart for worship as well as for those seeking to find their calling.

Todd grew up in a talented family and he believed his career would be in music. However, he learned along the way he also had a passion for helping others “excavate” their God-given calling and gifts.

He reminded me that talent and passion are different. If you dig deeper into my site, you will see I have loved writing and drawing cartoons over the years. But my passion has changed. While I still love to draw, I love writing even more. I began seeing the written captions as more important than my drawings.

Talent is good. Finding your passion is even better. It is possible for someone to be talented at something they have no passion for. It can aggravate others who wished they had that talent. Yet, we are all different. We can’t all make our living at a talent, especially when we would rather be doing something else!

Sometimes, being a good steward of talent means finding the sweet spot between it and the passion. May you find that right balance!

Making Something From Nothing

Before I tackled this morning’s topic, I tweeted this:

I have loved this morning because I’ve had a chance to take some more life out of a pen as I wrote my morning pages. I enjoyed praying, thinking, and writing my thoughts down.

In a sense, it’s creating something out of nothing. I let the thoughts flow and saw where I ended up.

On the other hand, can we ever truly create something from nothing? I need a pen and paper in order to write. If not a pen, maybe a keyboard. We act on something in order to bring our thoughts and creativity to life.

Every creative person needs some time to express their thoughts and see where they lead. That is where we create something from nothing.

Get your thoughts out today and express your creativity. Whether it’s with pen and paper, some craft clay or in song and dance, we all need to bring our thoughts out into the open once in a while. It’s good for our personal and business lives.

Angry Opinions

The world is awash in opinions. If you turn on a news show, or take a glance at Facebook, you’ll get plenty of opinions. I have learned over the years if it is difficult to get an opinion across, getting angrier about it doesn’t get your point across. It’s like speaking louder to someone that doesn’t understand your language.

Passion in an argument is good. A well-reasoned, thoughtful opinion is better. And I may be biased, but gentle, genial humor with an opinion is best.
