When I drew this, I was thinking how great it would have been to be Jesus’ disciple and get official t-shirts. Did they know they were part of something really big?
When you read how they reacted at Jesus’ arrest, trial, and crucifixion, probably not. They thought they were going to be part of an earthly kingdom. They had this idea that Jesus would come in like a triumphant King David and show Rome who was the real boss.
They had no idea that they would be a part of something that would last two over two millennia. But give them a little break. Who would have seen that coming?
Maybe they were just happy to be a part of an elite group and get official t-shirts. The disciples had enough sense to know that there was something unique about Jesus. And they saw enough to know he had power beyond any human they were aware of.
They were devastated when things didn’t go according to their expectations. After all, they had invested three years of their lives only to see their leader executed. A lot happened in such a short time. I could give the disciples a little break. After all, if I were in the group, I would have been simple enough to be happy with the official t-shirts as well.
