Wisdom and Talking Cartoon

Being quiet has its advantages. When we slow down and listen to others, we can be perceived as knowledgeable without saying a word. This concept and a proverb led to this wisdom and talking cartoon.

Wisdom and talking cartoon: A boy says, "Everyone thinks I am wise until you call on me and I have to open my mouth!"

There are several Bible verses that speak about this. But for me, James 1:19 has helped me greatly over the years. If only it was easy to apply to everyday living! Social and traditional media encourages us to spout off whatever comes to mind. After all, a blog with no content isn’t very compelling, is it?

There are times when we need to speak up and a time to be quiet. In school, I learned it was frowned upon to remain quiet when a teacher called upon me. I soon learned the fear of incurring the teacher’s ire was stronger than the fear of saying the wrong answer. Also, I learned that daydreaming and doodling were unwise activities during class. There is a time and place for everything!

I based this cartoon on Proverbs 13:3.

Those who control their tongue will have a long life;
opening your mouth can ruin everything.

Proverbs 13:3 (NLT)

I realize I could be perceived as hypocritical when I tout the virtues of saying little, yet I created this wisdom and talking cartoon. That is one of the hazards of this job.

Editor’s Note: I originally published this blog on October 6, 2015. I revamped and updated it for timeliness and comprehensiveness.
