Christmas on the Freeway

Cartoon of two boys under a Christmas tree. One says, "It must have been tough for Joseph and Mary. Can you imagine driving a donkey on the freeway?"A freeway is a place of busyness. We are speeding by, barely noticing what is going on around us. A freeway is made to get us somewhere as quick as possible.

Experience has taught me a freeway is not a place for contemplation or for quiet reflection. It is not a place you would expect Joseph and Mary. Every once in a while, we need to get off the freeway, pause, and reflect on what we are thankful for this holiday season.

Christmas Recordings

Nobody says “tape” anymore, do they? Somebody can’t tape you if they are using a smartphone or a digital recorder, can they?

I am old enough to remember when I taped my kids during Christmas. I don’t know where the videotape is now. Perhaps my kids got rid of the evidence. Or as we like to say around the house, “It must be in storage!”

At any rate, I could have taped some great death-defying scenes if I had stunt doubles for my kids. Then again, it’s difficult to find a stunt double that looks like a preschooler.

Christmas Competition

Cartoon of Santa and a boy. Santa Claus says, “It’s not a competition. And no, I won’t tell you what Bobby is getting.”Most kids aren’t as brash as this little guy. But this time of year, it gets easy to compare and wonder if Bobby is getting as much or more than the rest of us.

However, Christmas is not a competition. The only way to experience it with joy is to remember the first Christmas gift. After that first gift, nothing else comes close.

Temptation Surplus Disorder

Cartoon of two boys. One says, “My problem is that I have TSD. I have a Temptation Surplus Disorder.”

There is no shortage of temptation, especially around this time of year. There is plenty of food to enjoy, kids’ shows are bombarded with toy commercials and as it gets colder, it feels good to just relax and skip some activity.

Be brave, my friend! We all have TSD this time of year. Combat it with a little discipline and push through to resolution time at the beginning of next year!

A comedy or a tragegy?

Cartoon of a sad boy. He says, "My life is going nowhere. At this rate I'll never sell the movie rights to my life story!"

It sounds great to have a movie made about your life until you realize all life journeys worth watching involve discomfort, pain and insurmountable odds. After all, nobody needs a hero if there is nothing to be rescued from.
