Why students hate the balanced calendar

Cartoon of two boys waiting at a bus stop. One is wearing swim trunks, a backpack and flip-flops. He says, "If they're going to make me go to school in the summer, I'm going to dress like it's still summer." Cartoon of two boys waiting at a bus stop. One is wearing swim trunks, a backpack and flip-flops. He says, “If they’re going to make me go to school in the summer, I’m going to dress like it’s still summer.”

Once upon a time in Indiana, kids didn’t go back to school until after the Labor Day weekend. But today, as of August 1, 2013, some school systems are already in session.

I don’t know if the “balanced calendar” will help students raise their grades. But I do know for many, it has sure raised their ire!

How to run from your troubles

cartoon of a guy running. The captions says, "i don't run so I can run away from my troubles."

Whenever you’re going through some troubling times, and who doesn’t, it helps to get some exercise.

This morning, it was very warm. the humidity made things steamy at six in the morning. But a good run helped me clear my head and feel better than I had in several days.

If you’re physically able to do it, I’d encourage you to take a walk or a run. When you get your body moving, it helps get the brain unstuck as well.

Some days, it’s just too hard to find a scapegoat. At least it is for individuals who still say “mischief.”

How to know you aren’t making your point

Cartoon of a business man looking at another with donuts for eyes. the caption says, "I wasn’t getting through to this guy. His eyes were simply glazed over."

In the United States, we are coming back from the Independence Day holiday. Many people are out for summer vacation. You may notice your coworkers aren’t as alert as they were before  break. Sometimes, it’s obvious. Other times, you have to look for subtle cues. Here’s how to know someone isn’t listening to you.

  • Coworker responds to each sentence you utter with, “I’m with you, Sparky!”
  • Coworker still has remnants of exploded fireworks in hair. She keep yelling, “Fire in the hole!” and ducks for cover.
  • Your coworker has replaced his glasses with glazed donuts.
  • When you say “good morning,” your coworker replies, “Why?”

If any of these happen to you, don’t worry. It will take time for your friend to get reacclimated to the environment. In the meantime, have some fun and get your coworker to agree to take on some of your additional workload. You’ll be able to clean your desk before they know what hit them.

Why have a book without pictures?

Cartoon of a boy with a book and some popcorn. He says, A book without pictures is like popcorn without salt.

What can I say? Pictures make a book more interesting. And I bet you agree with me too. It’s sad that society reasons you must have nothing but text on a page. Don’t get me wrong. Book design is an art unto itself and takes a lot of work to make it look perfect. But still, books without pictures have always looked boring and inaccessible.
