This year, I got to write an article about baby and child dedication in my church tradition. Tomorrow, in many churches, there will be a connection between baby dedication and Mother’s Day.
In addition, I had the pleasure of interviewing my wife on the subject. It was fun to put her in the hot seat for a few minutes. And I must say, she did a good job with the questions. I also got to include two other friends. One of them was instrumental in mentoring my wife and me when we began the parenting journey.
The Exciting World of Parenting
Let’s face it. Caring for kids can be very unpredictable. New parents try to control every facet of their firstborn’s life. It doesn’t take long for them to discover that was wishful thinking. The minute a stinky, explosive diaper throws a monkey wrench into the best-laid plans, parents find out many things are out of their control.
By the time a second child comes along, parents learn to let go a little bit. If a third little bundle of joy comes along, parents learn to adopt a policy of laissez-faire. By that time, parents are speaking those words of wisdom, “Let it be!”
Importance of Child Dedication
That is why I see baby and child dedication as an important event. For those of us who value faith, it is a way to remind us what is important. Pastors remind parents of the important role they play in raising their children.
In addition, the pastor reminds the church that they are part of the child’s life as well. A church is one of the few places today where a child can interact with several generations and experience community.
Tomorrow, I will think about these things as we celebrate another baby dedication and Mother’s Day.
