A life of Excuses

What do we do with a life of excuses? What should we do when we find ourselves living a life of regrets and could-have-beens?

It’s too easy to make excuses when things aren’t going the way we thought they would by now. What do we do when we are tempted to put the blame on the system or a tool?

This quote by Charles Spurgeon reminds me that excuses come too easily for me.

Lazy people always find fault with their tools, and those who do not intend to work always find some excuse.
Charles Spurgeon

What’s your excuse?

When things don’t go as expected, we can either give up or work to fix the problem. A flat tire can either be an excuse to stop working or a challenge to overcome. We don’t have to be burdened by problems. We can fix them.

Of course, if we find we can’t fix them, we can always seek help too. Maybe we don’t have the skills or tools to fix the problem, but someone else does.

Sometimes, we aren’t moving on because we are too lazy to fix it. Other times, it’s because we are too proud to ask for help. Either way, there is a solution if we are humble and diligent enough to seek it.

We all Need Help

In a good story, the hero rarely succeeds alone. Especially in a plot where the circumstances appear dire, the hero has some help.

We all need help. "People seldom refuse help, if one offers it in the right way." A. C. Benson

One of the tragedies of this age is that we are increasingly loners and lonely. We go about self-improvement projects alone and falter because of our blind spots. And it seems to be getting worse. It’s become an epidemic after the pandemic. When we feel we have to go it alone, all hope evaporates.

But we are never truly alone. Keep this in mind: we can be recipients and givers of assistance no matter what stage of need you are in.

Help that maintains the dignity of the one in need and gives kindness and consideration to them works wonders.

Think back to when you were in need, and someone was there to give you aid. That is a story worth telling. Perhaps that story will help someone else see that they can rise from a low place.

An encouraging story can be just the help someone needs.

How to Help Your Mom

When it comes to helping others, we may have good intentions, but miss the mark. This inspired me to write and draw this “How to help your mom” cartoon.

How to help your Mom cartoon: a teen boy says, From now on, I’m going to help you around here, mom. Do you want me to help you learn how to shoot hoops?

We may get helpful advice such as, “Use your skills to help others.” But what if our skills aren’t really what the other person needs? Does this boy’s mom really want to know how to shoot hoops? Perhaps. But could a little help with the laundry be what she really needs?
