Illustration Friday: Unfold

These boys are enjoying a couple of marshmallows around a campfire. Will there be scary stories? Will a coyote or owl disrupt their outing? Who knows what will unfold next?

Two boys roast marshmallows around a campfire. Will there be stories? Loud critters? Who knows what will unfold next?

This was part of a clip art assignment for Warner Press. I drew this back in 2009 to test an online clip-art service.

Over the years, I drew and submitted several assignments for an Illustration Friday competition. Too bad the competition appears to be a thing of the past. You just never know what will unfold next.

Spiritual Discipline for Kids Cartoon

I have worked with kids at church for some time. My goal has been to pass along some of the joys and insights I have learned along the way. That can be challenging when children are excited and very active. So this led to this spiritual discipline for kids cartoon.

Spiritual discipline for kids cartoon. A teacher says, "It can be challenging to teach spiritual discipline to a child who once stuck gum drops up his nose."

Morning and Evening Kids

There is a big difference between a Sunday morning and an evening group of kids. On Sunday morning, most children are subdued. They may be just waking up. Perhaps the cereal hasn’t kicked in or they were doing activities the night before.

Nature’s April Fool

I don’t know what the weather is like where you are. But in Indiana and Ohio, we’ve had a few times when the weather on April fools day has been quite the joke!

Cartoon of boy and girl with snowman. She says, "I can't stand it when nature throws us an April fools joke." April fools day

Two days ago, the temperature was in the seventies. But today, we’ll be lucky to see the forties in Ohio. Parts of the state may even have snow. Happy April fools day!

Do You Have the Courage to Go Out There?

There are warning signs that are legitimate. As I write this, we are experiencing the beginnings of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 spread in the United States. It would be foolish to ignore the warnings such as those broadcast by the World Health Organization:

  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Cough into your bent elbow
  • Don’t travel to places that are in the midst of the outbreak

At the same time, there can be a lot of misinformation out there. And if you spend enough time on the Internet, you will find warnings that are overly cautious or just plain wrong.

When I drew this cartoon, I thought about how we can get overly cautious. It’s true that pollen can really mess with people. I’ve had hay fever over the years and I am not a fan of the time of year when goldenrod is in full bloom. Still, for most people, it’s not a severe weather event.

There are times when it takes courage to go out there into the world. It remains to be seen if all the conferences that are getting canceled due to COVID-19 are legitimate or overkill. We won’t know the full impact until much later. But in the meantime, we need to keep living and do the activities that make life full.

How are you handling this outbreak and all the warnings? Let us know in the comments.

Take a Bounce

Illustration of a girl bouncing on a trampoline

I drew this for Illustration Friday. This week’s word is “bounce.”

I began this illustration in Adobe Ideas for the iPad. Then I took it into Adobe Illustrator.
