What Marriage Has Taught Me

Out on the town for our 35th anniversary

A lot has happened since I said, “I do.” On my wedding anniversary, I pondered what thirty-five years of marriage has taught me.

On December 3, 1988, I took the plunge with a lady I had fallen for nearly two years earlier. We began as college classmates, learned to like each other (despite our very different music and fashion tastes), and fell in love, to the surprise of nearly everyone (including us).

Since that unseasonably warm December day, we’ve had a lot of adventures and misadventures. We’ve experienced career changes and loss. And we found ourselves in ministry. Boy! We didn’t see that coming!

Along the way, we raised two great kids, two cats, and a dog who hated children. Considering my wife was in children’s ministry, we didn’t consider that an asset.

There are time-worn tips on how to have a successful marriage. There are also a few lessons I learned along the way.

Today, I am pondering some of the lessons I learned. Here are four observations that come to mind.

Nature’s April Fool

I don’t know what the weather is like where you are. But in Indiana and Ohio, we’ve had a few times when the weather on April fools day has been quite the joke!

Cartoon of boy and girl with snowman. She says, "I can't stand it when nature throws us an April fools joke." April fools day

Two days ago, the temperature was in the seventies. But today, we’ll be lucky to see the forties in Ohio. Parts of the state may even have snow. Happy April fools day!

Fair Weather, Frigid Friends

Cartoon of a boy and snowman. The boy says, "I am realizing you're the kind of friend that is here today, and gone tomorrow."Friendship is a complicated thing, especially when your friend is only around for a season. It can be hard when snowbird of a friend flies to Florida or Arizona. I have found myself in a role-reversal since my kids live in those states.

But distance shouldn’t separate friends like it once did, right? Technology and air travel makes it possible to bridge the gap that once seemed like a bottomless chasm. We can still have close friends that have moved far away. It’s also a good thing for our friends who enjoy the sub-zero temperatures like Mister Snowman.

Whether your friend is warm and bubbly, or cold and frigid, perhaps today is a good day to reach out and give them a call or text today.

Frozen Church Greeter | Cartoon

Cartoon of a man saying to a snowman, "You're doing great, but I don't see you on the greeter volunteer list."

The best volunteers show up in the most unexpected places. I am not saying snowmen make the best greeters. After all, their verbal skills leave a lot to be desired. But they do have two attributes every greeter needs; be present and smile.

When I came up with this idea, I thought of all the hard working greeters that brave the elements over the winter. They do their best to make a visitor feel welcome. They make us feel warm on the inside even though they are freezing in the doorway.

Let’s give credit to all the church greeters who brave the winter elements to make everyone feel welcomed.

I drew this cartoon for the “January 2017 Church of God Newsletter.”

Either Santa had to take some time off this year or he needed a little extra help. I picture snowmen as frigid scarecrows, like in the Wizard of Oz. They are always ready to help, and they would be more effective if they only had a brain!
