How to Help Your Mom

When it comes to helping others, we may have good intentions, but miss the mark. This inspired me to write and draw this “How to help your mom” cartoon.

How to help your Mom cartoon: a teen boy says, From now on, I’m going to help you around here, mom. Do you want me to help you learn how to shoot hoops?

We may get helpful advice such as, “Use your skills to help others.” But what if our skills aren’t really what the other person needs? Does this boy’s mom really want to know how to shoot hoops? Perhaps. But could a little help with the laundry be what she really needs?

Memorial Day 2022

It is Memorial Day, 2022. Today, I think back to a post I wrote in 2010. It was a post about my wife’s grandfather who served in World War II. He had passed away long before I met my wife. I wondered what stories he would have had to tell.

Cartoon of dad and son at grave site: Memorial Day

This day is about honoring those who paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives. I know I enjoy many freedoms today because of the men and women who made the choice to defend my country.

Birthday Chorale

Most of us like to be acknowledged on our birthdays. On a Sunday, what would be better than a birthday chorale singing in our honor?

Birthday chorale cartoon: A boy says, "It's my birthday, Pastor. Why didn't the choir sing, 'Happy birthday?'"

When I first posted this, it was my wife’s birthday and she was directing the children’s ministry at our church. Since her birthday fell on a Sunday that year, I got the kids in Happy Birthday to her.

Mopped-up Fun

When you work with kids, you know it’s going well when the janitor gets to deal with some mopped-up fun. That idea inspired this cartoon.

Mopped-up fun cartoon. A janitor says, “I always know the preschoolers' class had an exciting morning in here when you ask for a mop.”

When I am leading large group activities on a Sunday morning, I smile when I realize the game is going to require blue tarps on the floor. I know the kids will get excited and the morning will be memorable. Bring on the rain ponchos, goggles, and a mop!

Getting to Know You!

One of my fond memories of my mom is when she would sing, Getting to Know You, from The King and I. As an introvert, it gave me a sense of the positive possibilities when I am friendly and reach out to people. It’s one way to learn to love our neighbors as The Good Book directs us to.

However, it’s easier said than done, isn’t it? We’ve been taught to be reserved, keep to ourselves, and even be a little suspicious of our neighbors. That tension inspired me to write and draw this cartoon.
