Crazy Faith

The other day, my wife and I were talking with a friend about recent decisions. My wife was led to step away from a flourishing ministry to make room for the next step in her life. My wife commented on how some decisions require faith. The friend replied, “Or requires being a little crazy!” Hmm… crazy faith? That sounds about right!

I suppose any faith looks crazy to many people. After all, we live in a world that touts Seeing is believing! Yet, if everyone lived by this mantra, we would create nothing new or innovative. Without faith, there is no hope. Without hope, what’s the point of living if the present looks bleak?

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Past Fear / Future Faith

  • There was a time when scientists warned if the human body was ever in a vehicle that went over 75 miles per hour, it would explode.
  • At one time, we considered heavier-than-air flight impossible. That is until the Wright Brothers figured it out.
  • We thought running a four-minute mile was impossible. Scientists thought the body couldn’t take such stress. Then Roger Bannister did it.

That’s Crazy!

Today’s cartoon is not an assault on faith. It’s a reminder that big brothers will frequently goad little brothers into doing things neither one of them should be doing. Come to think of it, I wonder if Wilbur did something similar to his brother Orville? Perhaps great leaps of faith involve big brothers pushing little brothers to push the limits.

Maybe faith and vision can appear crazy. After all, faith involves risk. If so, call me crazy. I’d rather have faith than accept things the way they are and not see a vision for the future. I am thankful my little brother put up with my crazy ideas. I am also thankful for my wife for helping me see that faith is a powerful agent for change!
