What can I contribute?

When it comes to jobs, very few come to a workplace asking, “What can I contribute?” Alas, we are more likely to ask, “What’s in it for me?”

"To ask, 'What can I contribute?' is to look for the unused potential in the job." Peter Drucker

But Peter Drucker’s quote reminds me when we are inwardly focused, we miss out. What if we see a job as an opportunity to contribute something only we can give?

Some would call that servant leadership.

Cartoon of a dog and cat about servant leadership

Each of us is unique in our talents, experiences, and personalities. We have skills that no one else has. Perhaps that is exactly why we are in the position we are today for a very specific purpose.

Instead of asking, “What can I get out of this?” Perhaps the better question is, “What can I do today that adds value to my organization?”

Do My Bidding Cartoon

Let’s face it. We are all selfish and would like things to go our way all the time. That’s where this “do my bidding cartoon” came from.

Do my bidding cartoon. A boy says, "I'm mad! Why can't the world to my bidding?"

Nobody like selfish people, do we? Of course, if we’re honest, we don’t like selfish people because we want to be the selfish person. All of us want to be king of the world and have everyone do their bidding.

There are seven billion potential dictators in the world, and I am just as selfish as the rest of them. There! I said it! confession is good for the soul, this morning.

When a sign is too obvious

cartoon of a guy holding a stop sign

Cartoon of a guy holding a stop sign. the caption says, While it was true Tom prayed for a sign from God, this wasn’t what he had hoped for.

Many times, when I’ve received a sign, it wasn’t the one I hoped for either. I don’t like it when I had a set of plans that doesn’t jive with the natural order of things. Sometimes, God has to hit me over the head with a stop sign to get my attention. When I finally do listen, I realized I could’ve saved myself a lot of frustration by just heeding the signs.

Why brainstorming for service projects is so hard

Cartoon of two women brainstorming on service projects

Just why is brainstorming for service projects so hard?

It can be hard brainstorming about projects for others when there are dirty dishes in the sink and weeds in the front yard, can’t it? I’ve found I have no problem learning how to be selfish. It comes naturally to me. Before I know it, I’m thinking less about others who have it much worse than me and start thinking about my own little world. How about you?

I drew this cartoon for the Church of God Ministries e-newsletter.
