Joyrides Come With a Cost

I occasionally hear on the news of someone that takes a vehicle and goes off on a joyride. It never ends well. The perpetrator may have a thrill for a few minutes, but they will probably get caught. A few minutes of a ride in Santa’s sleigh without the big guy’s permission would probably end in severe gift consequences.

Consider your actions before you take a mental or physical joyride. a moment of a thrill can lead to severe consequences.

  • Is this moment of indiscretion something you would be proud of?
  • Would you be fine with your actions showing up on the evening news?
  • If a biography or movie was written about your life, would you want this scene added?
    • Sure, it may make for a comedy, but at who’s expense would the joke be on?

Santa really needs to lock the sleigh and install a naughty elf driving deterrent.

This morning, I am going to be running the To Do My Best Half-Marathon in Troy, Ohio. I am looking forward to it because I haven’t run one in well over two years. I know. It’s a sickness. But I gladly embrace my malady.

Took a risk, no regrets

Last year, my wife and I took one of the biggest risks of our lives. We moved away from everything and everyone we knew to do what we were called to do. I resigned from a steady job where I had a recent promotion to join my wife in this new adventure. Like the legend of Hérnando Cortéz, we burned our ships didn’t look back and headed for Arizona.

It didn’t work out the way we had hoped. I thought I could immediately land a new job right away. It took eight months. My father-in-law was gravely ill and eventually passed away. This caused us to make many trips back to the Midwest. A five-year commitment was cut to one year.

Yet, we have no regrets. In fact, I am glad we took a risk. It taught me a few things I never expected.

The photograph he uses makes an effective point. What changed in seventy years since the first photo was taken? A lot, or did it?

This got me thinking about a business man I knew who passed away recently. He was a great guy and the picture of health. Yet he passed away at age 74 from surgery complications. It wasn’t even a life-threatening procedure. One minute he was here, the next, he was gone.

He will be remembered not for his business accomplishments, but for what a nice guy he was. He always had a smile. He was encouraging and a man of common sense. You could rely on his advice.

His Facebook profile is quiet now. Not many people will remember him for his Facebook account or for past business deals. What he will be remembered for was how he was a man of encouragement and integrity.

As I write and illustrate today, I’ll be thinking about Dan’s post and my friend. What will I do today that will build a legacy?
