Running as a Form of Prayer Step-by-step

Mornings are my favorite time to run. As I head out the door, the new day has yet to take shape. There are so many possibilities. An early morning run is an excellent time to begin the day in prayer. Indeed, I’ve found running to be a form of prayer. I agree with the ishouldberunning.com blog that prayer and running go hand-in-hand.

I didn’t start running to strengthen my spiritual life. Instead, I began because I wasn’t happy with my dad’s gut. But as I have turned running into a habit, I’ve found the practice to be just as spiritual as physical.

How do you connect with God? How do you make running a form of prayer? The following steps have helped me.

Endurance Race Cartoon

Anybody who knows me, knows I love to run. I’ve tried to get others involved in my love, to no avail. An incident with my wife and a very hot and humid morning inspired this endurance race cartoon.

Endurance Race Cartoon: A woman says, "Run the race with perseverance, Honey! We haven't left our driveway yet!"

My timing was horrible! she wanted to try running and I was excited to have her along as a running partner. Unfortunately, the heat index was well above ninety degrees on a hot and humid, July morning. It was not the best day to introduce someone to the love of distance running. We made it! but we have never run together again. And I can’t say I blame her!

Lessons From Marathon Day

Cartoon of a jogging coupleThe marathon is over. I completed the goal, which was to finish. The weather was cool until about two hours into the race. The sun began affecting all of us. For a time, I wondered if I was going to make it. My hamstring started bothering me around mile seventeen. Around mile twenty-three, I had to stop and a nice security guard helped me stretch it out. After that, I walked most of the way until I was within sight of the finish line.

There are a few lessons I’ve learned from this race:

Running in the rain makes you resilient… or crazy

Nighttime photo of the Greenville, Ohio traffic circle.Just after I took this photo, the rain came down. I knew it was coming. The weather app warned me. But I was happy. I was hoping to make it to this point before the shower. Thankfully, the lightning didn’t show up until I was nearly done. By the time I finished I was drenched.

In the past, a dear family member or two would call me crazy for running in inclement weather. Friends usually say nothing but give me that look as if I had sniffed too much rubber cement in my early graphic design days.

Expect a Little Blister: 8/6/16 Run

This morning, I got to do something I haven’t done in over a year. I got to run seven miles. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for some time. I would like to build up in order to run a marathon by next year.

I jogged Through the City of Greenville Park and Alice Bish Park. There is a nice path along Greenville Creek.

At about five miles, I felt a blister form on the inside sole of my feet. I recalled when I had trained before this happened. It’s not a major blister. It’s just one that will toughen my feet as I begin to increase the miles.
