Packed for VBS Cartoon

Since the first word of VBS suggests we’re going on a vacation. I had some fun with the ideas and drew this Packed for VBS cartoon.

Packed for VBS Cartoon: A boy says, "Thanks for inviting me to vacation Bible school. I'm all packed!'

When you think about it, vacation Bible school is false advertising. After all, shouldn’t it be called staycation Bible school? This isn’t an all-inclusive vacation to Cancun. We can try to use props to make the sanctuary look like a jungle or the Holy Land. But we’re not fooling anyone over six years old.

No Cat Scans Cartoon

No, I am not the guy in this cartoon. My wife and I have a cat. I love cats and dogs. So this “No Cat Scans Cartoon” is simply based on cranky people.

No cat scans cartoon: A man says, "I hate cats! I want a dog scan."

Just for the record, I like cats too. Over the years, we’ve had one of each at our house. Yes, we were equal opportunity pet owners.

We used to have a dog, but she passed on to doggie heaven and we’re left with the feline. There are plus and minuses for each type of pet. I don’t have to walk the dog in subzero weather. Then again a cat leaves plenty of messes to clean up. It’s a toss-up!

How do you rate Vacation Bible School?

Some families make a summer of going to different, local VBS programs. One day, I thought of what it would look like if there was a VBS critic, much like a movie or concert critic. That inspired my “How do you rate vacation Bible school?” cartoon.

How do you rate vacation Bible school cartoon: a boy says, "I give this VBS an A for snacks and a B for decor."

Seriously though, if we’re going to host a big program like VBS, we need to consider how effective it is and how we can improve it. And if the volunteers have to eat the snacks, we would like them to be palatable to grown-ups too!

Authenticity Cartoon

Who likes a fake? Nobody wants to be known as someone you can’t trust. A stroll through a store one day inspired this authenticity cartoon.

Authenticity Cartoon: A boy says, "I've been looking for authenticity. So far, all I know is it isn't in any discount department stores."

Every time I go to a department store, I wonder how many people are looking for something that just isn’t in all those goods. You know, things like love, peace, and authenticity. After all, money can’t buy love.

Do You Volunteer For the Right Reasons?

It was great to see nonprofits and volunteers help ease the pain through the coronavirus pandemic. It’s safe to say most people don’t volunteer for the money like our guy in today’s cartoon. But do you volunteer for the right reasons? And does the motivation matter?

Some volunteer projects can be gross. Others have nice perks like donuts. There are projects that put a spotlight on the volunteers while others faithfully serve in the background. As this article shows, Our motivations to volunteer can be quite varied. Do these factors matter?

As long as something good is coming out of volunteering, motives may take a back seat. However, we know of stories where someone appeared to be doing something for altruistic motives and they ended up embezzling or taking advantage of someone or a group of people.
