Non GMO sermons

Cartoon of a man shaking a pastor's hand. He says, “What a great sermon, Pastor! I could tell it was not genetically modified.”I admire the pastors who have delivered sermons ever since I was old enough to recognize it was my Grandpa at the pulpit and he was saying some pretty deep things.

I look at the guy who is trying to flatter the pastor as clueless. Perhaps he has grabbed on to a phrase that he has no clue about and just wants to sound sophisticated.

When you shake hands with your pastor this morning, be sure your complement suggests you actually heard and retained the sermon within your good old noggin.

Creativity Can Get Noisy

Cartoon of two girls looking at two boisterous boys. One girl says, "When it comes to boys, it isn't creativity until they make some rude noises."

Creativity can come unexpectedly and in some amazing varieties. Sometimes, it takes some cutting up and a little obnoxious behavior to get the creative juices flowing.

When I saw my three-year-old niece the other day, she was expressing some “noisy boy” creativity in the form of some rude noises. Perhaps rude noises aren’t limited by gender anymore. And it may do us good to act as carefree as a preschooler or preteen friends when it comes to creativity. May we all have a chance to express a little creativity with some friends today.

I drew this for Kidzmatter Magazine.

Driving is Like Falling off a Bike

Cartoon of two young men in a car. The driver says, “Relax! How hard can it be to drive? This car doesn’t have near as many gears as a ten speed bike! ”It was a rude awakening when I discovered driving a cart was a bit more challenging than my trusty bike. On the plus side, I didn’t have to fall out of the car to learn. On the minus side, I nearly gave my driving instructor a heart attack when we ended up in a ditch. It didn’t help much that the instructor was a classmate of my dad. They had a great time chatting up and commenting on my driving expertise.

So a word of advice to new drivers: the number of gears does not correlate to the difficulty of the vehicle.

Illustration for Dealing with Difficult People Sermon Series

What kind of artwork would you use for a sermon series that can ruffle a few feathers, yet has opportunities for humor? Well, how about a cartoon? I make no qualms about my biases, but I feel it especially worked for this series.

This sermon series is running from May 14—June 4, 2017, at Salem Church of God

Mothers Day and Determination

This morning at church, we will celebrate Mother’s Day. It’s the third highest attended Sunday in the year with Easter and Christmas in the top two positions. This Sunday, I will be helping kids get from their classes to big church so they can sing and warm their mother’s hearts. It should make for some moist eyes and wonderful photo opportunities.

Meanwhile, I will be teaching the elementary kids about determination. I like that because it reminds me of my mother. She has taught me determination and to keep going when things get hard.
